What is Technical Analysis?

There are various methods used to analyze securities and make investment decisions. There are two very broad categories - fundamental analysis which involves analyzing the characteristics of a company in order to estimate its value and technical analysis which lays more importance on the price movements in the market and doesn't care much about the value of a company or a commodity.

Technical analysis studies supply and demand in a market and attempts to determine future direction, or trend. It is an attempt at understanding the emotions in the market by studying the market itself.

In technical analysis, charts similar to the charts that used in business settings are generally used. The chart is a graphical representation of a series of prices over a set time frame. Two types of charts are used for technical analysis – bar chart and candlestick chart.
